PGA Championship Best Bets - Thoughts on Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and more

We are two days away from the first tee shots being struck to open the second major of the golf season, the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Yesterday, we chronicled five players who are worthy of having their name engraved on the Wanamaker Trophy Sunday night. This article will profile six players who have the game to finish in the Top 10 or Top 20 after 72 holes this weekend.

Top 10

Jordan Spieth (+230)

This week is Spieth’s lone chance this season to win the career Grand Slam as the PGA Championship is the only major to escape him in his career. Spieth comes in playing well having won the RBC Heritage and finishing second last week. He ranks eighth in SG/Scrambling and 18th in SG/Approach.

Rory McIlroy (+190)

He owns four Top 10’s this season so he has that going for him, which is countered by an eight-year majors drought. On the plus side, that means he’s due for a big week at a major. He carded a 64 at the Masters and he ranks third in SG/Off the Tee and fifth in SG/Tee to Green. He’s playing as well, if not better, than past major form and is coming off a solo fifth-place showing at Augusta.

Justin Thomas (+160)

Yes, going with brand names in this category so there’s no crazy value in these selections, but it’s not easy to place in the top 10 at a major. JT is tied for most Top 10 finishes this season (alongside Scottie Scheffler) with seven. Here’s hoping that number becomes eight this week. He leads the tour in par 4 scoring, and is in the top five of SG/Scrambling, SG/Approach and SG/Tee to Green.

Top 20

Hideki Matsuyama (Top 20 - +120)

Has notched five Top 10’s this season and has rebounded nicely from a neck injury which sidelined him following the Masters. Ranks sixth in SG/Approach and 7th in SG/Greens in Regulation.

Corey Conners (Top 20 - +170)

There is a LOT to like about Corey Conners game. His short game is his strength, which will be an important factor this week. He ranks near the top in greens in regulation (71%) and is ranked fourth in SG/Off the Tee and seventh in SG/GIR. Add in that he has finished 17th or better in five of his last eight major appearances, including a T6 at the Masters in April.

Tony Finau (Top 20 - +275)

Finau has a pair of top 10’s (T4 and T8) in his last two PGA Championship appearances. He has also placed in the top 10 in six of his last 12 majors. He hits it long and has a penchant for playing well in big events as witnessed by a top 5 finish in every major in his career.
