PGA Championship Betting: Best head-to-head matchup bets

Credit: PGA Championship (Instagram)

We are now less than 24 hours away from the second major championship from starting and did you see some of the pairings?

Holy star power Batman!

Tiger, Rory, and Jordan. When you are known worldwide by your first name, you know you have made it. All three fit that category.

Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Colin Morikawa. Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Cantlay.

Well done PGA!

Before we identify some hopefully profitable head-to-head matchups, feel free to review our first two articles - five golfers with the best chance to win, and players who will cash Top 10 and Top 20 tickets.

Now, let’s move into our best head-to-head matchups. As always, odds are provided by DraftKings Sportsbook:

If you are unfamiliar with this format, there’s no defense in golf. While it is a head-to-head matchup, the players may never see each other, let alone play in the same group. It’s simply who you think will finish with a better score over the course of four rounds.

Of course, you are going to hope your player plays a full 72 holes, because if he misses the cut, the best you can do is push, but only if the other player also misses the cut.

Now that we have the format clarified, here are five matchups to exploit this week at Southern Hills.

Shane Lowry (-130) over Joaquin Niemann

It’s a hefty price tag, but Lowry has placed top 15 in eight of his last 10 starts and ranks second in Strokes Gained (SG)/Scrambling.

Matt Fitzpatrick (-125) over Sam Burns

Fitzpatrick ranks first in Strokes Gained/Overall and has five Top 10 finishes this season. Meanwhile, Burns track record in majors hasn’t been stellar by any means - missed cut at the Masters in April and the US Open in 2021 with a T76 at the Open last July as his only made cut.

Max Homa (-125) over Tyrell Hatton

Homa was one of our five picks to possibly win the Wanamaker so if we can get him at only -115 over Hatton. Yes sir!

Hideki Matsuyama (-120) over Viktor Hovland

Hovland played his college golf nearby at Oklahoma State. He is one of the best young players in the game. His shortfall is his short game as he is ranked 234th in SG/around the green. That won’t cut it this week at Southern Hills. Matsuyama is as good a ball striker on tour and has finished 35th or better in nine PGA Championship starts.

Jordan Spieth (-115) over Cam Smith

I can get a player as hot as Spieth over Smith, yes please. Spieth has a win and second-place finish, doesn’t mind playing in the wind and this is the event he needs to win for the career Grand Slam. Smith is on his way to stardom, but this is great value with Spieth.

Good luck with whatever your plays are this weekend and here’s hoping we have a fantastic finish on Sunday afternoon.
