In the latest sign that some people truly are idiots, we got word on Thursday that a New York City couple has relinquished a pet cougar to authorities.
Admittedly, they're not dumb for turning it over to authorities. But for ever thinking it was a good idea to have a pet cougar in the first place. Especially in a Bronx apartment.

The owner of the 11-month-old female cougar surrendered the animal on Thursday, Kelly Donithan, director of animal disaster response for the Humane Society of the United States, said in a news release.
The cougar, nicknamed Sasha, spent the weekend at the Bronx Zoo receiving veterinary care and is now headed to the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas, officials said.
The Humane Society coordinated with zoo officials, the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York Police Department on the big cat’s removal.
On the one hand, as Donithan would later point out, the animal - and pretty much everyone - should be kind of thankful that the owners were smart enough to realize that yeah, it was a bad idea to have a big cat living in what was likely a tiny apartment in New York.
On the other hand, what kind of idiot thinks, "you know what, screw let's bring in an 80-lb big cat into this 600-square foot loft. What's the worst that can happen? It knocks over a plant? Forgets to pee in the litter box? You can pseudo-compliment the owner for actually turning over the mountain lion to authorities, while also acknowledging "what kind of idiot thinks its a good idea to have one in the first place."
In the end, at least this mountain lion - named "Sasha" by its owners - has a happy ending, as a quick Google search seems to indicate that "Turpentine Wildlife Refuge" is a good place for any animal to spend the rest of its life.
Basically, picture Carole Baskin's ranch, without all the weird videos of her bike riding. And allegedly feeding her ex-husband to tigers.
